community involvement of Visualeyes Optometry
At VisualEyes, we remain ever alert of the need for individuals to be enthusiastically involved in their
communities. To this end, we encourage our staff to take active roles outside the office to help make positive
changes in their world. Below is a partial list of some of our organizational and individual projects.
MEND
For the past two years, both our optometrist, Dr. Dodge, and Dave have been volunteering at MEND, a free clinic
in Pacoima which stands for Meet Each Need with Dignity. Every month they visit the clinic to give free
comprehensive eye examination (not just screenings) for patients that have limited access to care. Most patients
are Spanish-speaking only and have never had a true eye examination. With the examination comes a free pair
of glasses and any medical care that they require. This is truly a great experience. Dr. Dodge was honored by
MEND in 2008 as "Doctor of the Year."
Just this past September Dr. Dodge participated in a vision screening in which over 200 kids were screened for
any vision problems as school started.
Please speak with Dr. Dodge or visit www.mendpoverty.org for more information.
Annual World Sight Day
Every year Visualeyes Optometry participates in World Sight Day. This is a day to promote education about the
lack of vision care around the world. It is one day in which we can not only acknowledge the world around us, but
do something about it. A percentage of all proceeds for that day goes to Optometry Giving Sight, a foundation that
provides free eyecare around the world to underserved populations. We also collect old glasses that can be
recycled and given to those that have nothing. This is a great day in which the company, employees, and even
patients do their share to combat poor vision. This year, World Sight Day is October 14, 2010. Come by the office
to see what is going on.
More information can be found at givingsight.org.
Being Alive
Dr. Dodge is the optometric liaison for Being Alive, a fantastic organization for those with HIV. As a part of this
organization, Dr. Dodge has written articles for their newsletter, provided free eye examinations to members, and
helped in any way that he is able. He also served on the board of their annual gala in 2008.
Optometric Societies
Presently, Dr. Dodge is the President-Elect for the San Fernando Valley Optometric Society. He understands the
need to help out his fellow optometrists in various avenues.
Other projects
Dr. Dodge and Dr. Chowdhry love to speak to various organizations on numerous topics ranging from eye
protection and health to talking about fun visual facts. As recently as October 2009, Dr. Dodge spoke with a
kindergarten class about the eyes and how they work. It is getting out in the public and meeting with his
neighbors in which Dr. Dodge feels most comfortable. If you would like him to come speak to your organization
or school, please feel free to contact the office at any time.
